I visited Rajasthan in the north of India in February 2006. Although the landscape is generally arid, the towns and villages are bustling, noisy and very colourful. The signs of ancient heritage are everywhere, from the British rule and much earlier, with many splendid palaces and, of course, the magnificent Taj Mahal.
